EVENT NOTIFICATION

Date:

Place:

Title:

IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Group conference:
“Patterns and Processes in Forest Landscapes: Consequences of Human Management”

Short description:

Forest landscapes are multi-functional systems, and ecological functions are influenced by natural and cultural patterns. Managing forest landscapes is therefore a complex process of understanding the critical patterns of the landscape and their reciprocal interrelationship and interdependency.

This Conference will contribute to explore the theme of how culture affects forest landscapes and, in turn, how landscapes are influenced by humans.

Biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in mountain areas of Europe:
The challenge of interdisciplinary research
Short description:

For centuries agriculture has played a multifunctional role in defining and sustaining mountain biodiversity in Europe through the management of habitats, species and landscapes. With significant agricultural adjustment and contraction now in prospect, there is
potential for major impacts on mountain biodiversity. Some of these changes may be deleterious, e.g. loss of locally-adapted species and semi-natural habitats; others beneficial, e.g. new successional pathways providing opportunities for restoration of some elements of the pre-agricultural, wilder landscapes.
The focus of the conference will be to examine both the socio-economic drivers of agricultural change across upland Europe and the ecological effects of these new agricultural practices on landscapes and biodiversity.

Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Processing in the Assessment and Monitoring of Land Degradation and Desertification.
State of the Art and Operational Perspectives

Short description:

This conference intends to promote scientific exchange between specialists working on the interface of remote sensing, geoinformation processing, desertification/land degradation research and its socio-economic implications. Although it is targeted at the scientific community, contributions with application perspectives are of crucial importance, and we expect to have international bodies, such as the UNCCD, LADA or LUCC involved in steering the event. Thus, both an overview of the current state of the art as well as operational opportunities will be presented, which is especially important to initiate a transfer of expertise from the scientific community to clients interested in applying these techniques. In this context, participation of scientists from most affected countries is highly desired and will be financially supported for eligible applicants.

"European Union Expansion: Land Use Change and Environmental Effects in Rural Areas"
Short description:
This conference will examine and document how EU expansion (past and future) is a catalyst for land use changes and the environmental impacts in rural areas resulting from these changes. Given the linkages between political/economic change with land cover dynamics and environment, this conference will bring researchers active in this arena together to explore the effects of land use change in the rural sector on the terrestrial environment in the new setting of the EU. One aim of the conference is to develop active linkages among the participants to increase the probability of future collaborative research among the participants.
The conference will be centred on four themes:
1. Learning from past European land use change. In Europe, over the last 300 years, land cover alterations have been documented. Examine the physical (constraints/opportunities) and human (social, demographic, and policy) drivers of change and their impacts on the terrestrial environment;
2. Probable future land use change and impacts on the terrestrial environment such as landscape functionality alterations (water storage, filtering, etc.), erosion/deposition, sediment delivery alterations, biodiversity, and spatial attributes. Their impacts on the delivery of key ecosystem goods and services;
3. Identify the social/economic and physical drivers affecting contemporary land cover change. Evaluate their effects on specific aspects of the terrestrial environment;
4. Development of policy for long-term monitoring. Likely future land cover changes and critical data need to assess their environmental impacts.

International Conference ”Biodiversity, Science and Governance"
Short description:

Organized by France and sponsored by UNESCO, the Conference Biodiversity : science and governance is in response to an announcement made by the President of the French Republic at the Evian G8 summit in June 2003. This project, which was initially proposed by the Minister for Research to his counterparts at the G8 during informal meetings of the Carnegie group (Ministers for Research G8), now involves a much wider international community and, inter alia, major programmes and conventions such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as well as the NGOs involved in research such as the World Conservation Union (UICN).
