MiraMon software is 10 years old

The Generalitat de Catalunya, (the catalan government)promotes its use in the education and public administration sectors in Catalonia.
On Monday July 18th, at 18 hours, at the Pedrera (Casa Batlló) auditorium (Barcelona), took place the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Geographical Information System and Remote Sensing MiraMon; a powerful software, 100% developed in Catalonia and with wide international projection. It is developed at the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) ascribed to the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The act was presided by the Catalan Minister of Universities and Information Society (DURSI), Carles Solà, the director of the Weather Service of Catalonia of the Department of Environment and Housing (DMAH), Joan Pallisé, the president of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Lluís Ferrer; the Director of the Territory and Landscape Foundation, Jordi Sargatal and the director of the CREAF, Javier Retana.

The Honorable Conseller Carles Solà announced the agreement between the CREAF and the Catalan Government (Minister of Universities and Information Society), that will allow to freely distribute the MiraMon software to public administrations, research centers, schools and universities in Catalonia. The essence of the agreement is to subsidize the part of incomes that at present the project gets from license sales from administrations and students in Catalonia and thus, attain a greater use of this important tool in the Information Technologies and Communication fields.

The support from the DURSI also allows initiating the migration of the program to open source operating systems and to finance the CREAF activities to get to the new generation of the MiraMon program.

Dr. Xavier Pons pronounced the conference MiraTemps, where he remembered the origins of the program and its subsequent evolution. He ended his talk by citing the important role that the enthusiasm of the MiraMon team suppposed for the new future challenges of MiraMon.

The act continued in a more recreational way at the JazzRoom of the Cova del Drac, where Xavier Pons surprised the guests as master of quite another kind of keyboards.
