The first Scientific Session was organized by CREAF in 2003 as part of the centre’s 15th anniversary celebrations. Since 2005 these sessions have been organized jointly by CREAF, the Catalan Society of Biology (SCB) and the Catalan Institute of Natural History (ICHN). The main aim of the sessions is to contrast points of view of researchers, technical experts and government representatives on environmental topics and to create a framework for discussion and reflection on the current state of affairs, as well as to consider possible needs or shortcomings.

Each edition, which is held towards the end of the year, addresses different environmental issues from the perspective of scientific knowledge and its application to public administration management.

The sessions organized so far have been:

• 2009: Stop the loss of biodiversity
• 2008: Prospects on water use in terrestrial ecosystems
• 2007: Land fragmentation and biodiversity
• 2006: Global change: effects and management strategies
• 2005: Natural environment information systems: Application to research and management
• 2003: Indicators of sustainable forest management: Application and research
